Instant Developer: Foundation or Cloud?

by Andrea Maioli on 02/18/2016

We’re nearing the end of our preparations for the final version of Instant Developer Cloud, which, as we’ve announced, will be released at the end of March. These days lots of people are asking me what they should use for their next project: Foundation or Cloud?

I’m taking this opportunity to answer this question and also to reassure people worried about the future of Foundation. There are two editions of Instant Developer, and there will continue to be, because they respond to two different markets.

Instant Developer Foundation is perfect for corporate applications (web or mobile ) where development speed and the ability to achieve results through rapid iterations are important. In these cases, the number of users is not especially high – up to a few hundred – but the processes to be managed are complex and multifaceted. That’s why the business templates that Foundation offers provide the maximum result with the minimum effort, and without requiring specific expertise in technology.

In customer-facing applications, it’s normally the opposite: the process is simple, but the number of users can rise to the order of millions. To be successful, users need to instantly understand the response to their need, so user experience and focalization are the most important factors. In these cases we must turn to a professional designer and to development tools that guarantee the utmost flexibility and performance, and that is precisely what Instant Developer Cloud was created to deliver.

We therefore have two different markets to address, and they require different responses and the use of tools designed specifically for each of them. With its two editions, Instant Developer is the answer that targets both markets.

So to wrap up, I’ll come back to the question in the title: not Foundation – or – Cloud, but Foundation – and – Cloud.

I’ve just published my first app built using Foundation.
Although a small app, the speed is exceptional and now I understand – with help from the Forum and the RAD Chat group, I am more confident deploying on shared hosted servers now.
